My life, stories and shenanigans from Japan

I GOT A HOST FAMILY

No I didn’t. But it did get your attention.

Actually, it probably didn’t.

Goshers I am one crafty blogger.

But seriously. I have 42 days left (or something like that) untill I leave and nothing seems to be happening.  I did get a new packet yesterday from YFU, but there wasn’t really anything in it.  There was a packing list, but I can’t help but feel that, considering it was intended for kids going for either a summer or a semester, that my packing needs as a year student might differ.  In addition to that, it included some tips on Japan (The most respectable tip being “Get into an aspect of culture other than Anime/Manga. The two aren’t as prelevant in Japanese culture as you might think.” I can’t tell you how many times the anime craze has driven me crazy. Why couldn’t it be from Korea or something instead?) and a small book on Japanese and Japanese helpful phrases.

And the most ironic thing had to be the packing list, which said “Pack according to the climate of where you’re living”.   One of the tips of the tip page was “You may not get your host family until the day before you leave”. How the heck am I supposed to pack according to the climate of where I am going to live if I don’t even know where it is that I am going to live?

They also included a small slip of paper in the packet which they had added at my request saying “Get in contact with Colin” or something like that.  And I guess my mom sent them the wrong e-mail or something because on the bottom of the paper it gave an e-mail that was not my own :/

Hmmm

Hahaha I actually thought you did and was ready to congratulate you until I read the first sentence!! Aww but you’ll get one soon though!!

  2. Argh. don’t trick me like that! I was so sure that you had gotten a host family, and was so excised to hear about it XD
Well, know how it feels.. It’ll be pretty frustrated if I have to pack to a place I don’t know where is :s
There’s a difference between what I would pack to Hokkaido and what I pack with me to Kyushu..

  3. Or even more so what to pack if you’re going to Hokkaido or if you’re going to Okinawa or some other tropical island :P

  4. You’re going with YFU? I promise, it’ll be awesome fun. I went with YFU to Japan last summer, and I had the best time.

I got the same packet thingy you did. They’re right about the whole “Get into an aspect of culture other than Anime/Manga.” I found that knowing a lot of singers, actors, dramas, etc. are really useful to know though. It’s typical teenage stuff. Makes for good conversaton starters!

  5. Seriously Colin, I thought you had gottena family when I read that title. ); Don’t trick us like that! D:

  6. Hello, I’m a new reader to your blog and it’s topic struck my interest! :D I was hoping to be able to apply for a summer trip in Japan soon so your experiences will surely help me with that. Oh.. thanks by the way. xD But I wish you a safe trip and many fun times. ^^

On comment to your post… “(The most respectable tip being “Get into an aspect of culture other than Anime/Manga. ^ I love how they actually included that in the list thingy. It must have been a prevalent thing for them to have even mentioned it at all. I personally think that is major hilarity. xD

When I was younger, most of the japan “discussions” were nothing but anime. Unfortunately, that bias led me to envision Japanese life as revolving completely around anime; something that is far from the truth. >_< Oh well, you live and you learn. I hope that one day I will be able to know Japan for what it is. (As my professor said, between the United States and Japan, “there is only a difference in degree of expression, not one of kind.”) <– Probably one of the best expressions I’ve heard in a while. ^^

I hope your experience can be just as fulfilling and I’m really looking forward to reading your blog. Thanks and good luck!
